Types of Copyediting
That's right - there are a few kinds of copyediting. You may only be looking for someone to provide one kind, or you may seek an editor to provide several kinds. See below for information on each.
Technical EditingCorrecting spelling errors, subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, unnecessary/missing commas, em-dashes vs. en-dashes, misused words, sentence fragments, omitted/repeated words, and more.
Correlation EditingThis kind of editing is critical for academics. Academic articles & books often have related parts (page cross-references, charts, tables, maps, endnotes, headings/subheadings, citations, and tables of contents). You want to make sure the parts of your manuscript have been checked and verified/edited before you submit.

Style EditingText standardization, including: Chicago, MLA, and APA styles. This is about consistency and manuscript style specifications.
Substantive Editing (aka Content or Developmental Editing)This one is about "larger problems" in a manuscript - logic, clarity, passive vs. active voice, repetition, awkward passages/phrasing, transitions, cutting/lengthening as needed, finding spots for further research or citations, clarifying arguments and refining argument strength, etc.
